If you are looking for a free or low cost FTP client software, my recommendation is cuteFTP. I have no financial interest in cuteFTP at all. I took their cuteFTP ftp shareware trial and I just had to buy it.

I tried a few - I had ftp features with my host but these are very limited not really appropriate for transferring whole directories with ease.

The feature I like most about cuteFTP is that it allows me to edit my files from the interface, without having to download and edit and then find the directory and all that hoohah. (It still downloads the file, I think, but it internalises the download so the source code just appears in the interface)

The other thing I like about it is that it is so easy to use and has never crashed once or missed a beat.

I tried smartftp, a free program, but it crashed on my system, which is not a dog by the way.

Once I trialled cuteFTP they give you an option of purchasing for $20 instead of the usual $57. I didn’t go for it and I kicked myself, but I wrote to the sales team and asked them nicely if they would come to the party at the special price - and you guessed it - they did.

This was one of the best $20 I spent. It’s a really nice piece of software. I am only using the home version, but there is an industry standard pro version(CuteFTP Professional) for
more advanced and specialized features.

Home is more than enough for a normal website.
